Rooney Mara In Line For Oldboy

She's top choice for Spike Lee's remakeThis is just at the rumour and wishlist stage currently, but Twitch were first with the stories about Spike Lee and Josh Brolin, so we can be reasonably confident when they tell us that Rooney Mara is in serious contention for the female lead in Oldboy. That role would be sushi chef Mi-do, played in Park Chan-wook's film by Kang Hye-jeong. Lee's new version names her as Marie, according to Twitch, so there's probably reason to suspect that she won't be preparing sushi anymore either. But she'll presumably remain the love interest, who our hero Oh Dae-su / currently-unnamed-Brolin takes a shine to along the way to solving the mystery of his fifteen-year imprisonment. There's also the threat of her death hanging over his progress, just to spice things up. Oh, and without wishing to be spoilerific, perhaps there's more to her character than is immediately revealed...Mara, of course, is so hot right now in Hollywood, currently raging through David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as Stieg Larsson's violent goth punk hacker savant Lisbeth Salander. Oldboy would make for another edgy role in another dark remake, although as we've said before, Mark Protosevich has eight volumes of manga to draw from in his screenplay, and they don't much resemble the Chan-wook classic. There's potential for this to be a very different film, but comments from you guys on our previous reports suggest you're not very convinced by that argument...There doesn't seem to quite be a start-date for the Spike Lee Oldboy so far, but for all your current Rooney / Lisbeth needs, make sure you pick up the latest issue of Empire.

Talkback: Should Chris Nolan Direct The Twilight Zone?

According to Variety, Christopher Nolan tops the shortlist to helm Warner Bros.’ Twilight Zone reboot, but he’s not alone on the list of potential candidates; Michael Bay, Alfonso Cuaron, and Rupert Wyatt are also in the mix to direct the big-budget, single-story version based on Rod Serling’s original sci-fi television series. Nolan may have an in with producer Leonardo DiCaprio and the studio that released his last five films, not to mention the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. But should he get the gig? It might all be much simpler if each director was given a portion of the film to shoot, a la 1983’s Twilight Zone: The Movie, which split duties between John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller. Then again, probably not; could you see Nolan, Bay, Cuaron, and Wyatt sharing the same bill, let alone working together to create a balanced omnibus film? Meanwhile, there’s the question of each director’s upcoming schedule. Nolan and Bay already have other projects on deck, and it’d certainly be refreshing to see Bay go the small-scale route with his Pain & Gain crime pic than take on another huge franchise. Wyatt earned a bump with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which earned critical acclaim, but would he just go straight into prepping its inevitable sequel? Which leaves Cuaron. He’s certainly got the sci-fi/fantasy chops, with Children of Men, Harry Potter, and the upcoming Gravity under his belt. But is he the right guy for The Twilight Zone? Chime in below. Nolan, others may be slipping into ‘THE TWILIGHT ZONE’ [Variety’s Showblitz]

Questions and Solutions In regards to the Netflix-Qwikster Madness

Inside the wake in the news that Netflix is splitting off into two companies (Netflix and Qwikster), Moviefone solutions every possible question you've about what's next for your online giant. Q: Exactly what is a Qwikster? A: Qwikster is Netflix's new DVD-only business -- what Netflix was formerly before it started selling streaming video monthly monthly subscriptions. Once the title raises Napster, Friendster or other no-longer-cutting-edge Internet brands, well, maybe that is not any kind of accident. Q: Why did Netflix split its companies? A: Netflix sees streaming video since the future as well as the DVD-mailing business just like a dinosaur. (This is also true nearly all Hollywood and Wall Street, for the matter.) In the couple years, the business needs the DVD side, having its massive storage and shipping costs, being more pricey to make use of than it's worth. Concurrently, it is not ready to discount 100s of countless clients choosing utilisation of the business's huge and comprehensive DVD library over utilization of what's still a shallow pool of streaming content. Q: Is the reason why Netflix started charging separate costs this summer season for kinds of monthly monthly subscriptions? A: Yes. Clearly, many clients revolted over seeing your regular bills vary from $8.99 to $15.99 and canceled their monthly subscriptions. The stock cost needed a sizable hit, too. So Boss Reed Hastings probably felt he'd little choice but to announce the split, they did inside an apology that was e-mailed to clients and released on Netflix's blog late Sunday evening. Q: Wait, he apologized to clients? A: Yes, for imposing the modification on clients without coping with these with "respect and humbleness." Q: So, does that apology mean the membership cost will go back to exactly what it was? A: Hahaha. No. Q: Doesn't look like lots of an apology, then. A: Well, Hastings launched another apology on video, apparently shot while he was relaxing in the lake. Q: Wow, could a poolside apology for the little people who made his fortune be any longer condescending or tone hard of hearing? A: Not likely. Netflix Boss Reed Hastings' Clarification of His Apology Q: Will be the amusing tweets at NetflixGlobalPR further evidence of a bungled pr effort? A: Heh. No, that Twitter accound can be a parody. Q: So, essentially still want both DVD and streaming, I am likely to have accounts ad both Netflix and Qwikster? A: Yes. They'll appear separate charges inside your bank card bill, you may have to help keep separate billing profiles on Netflix.com and Qwikster.com. However, you can preserve one unique user ID and password. Q: Will those sites share my queue, my movie preferences and recommendations and my rental history? A: No. You will have to start with scratch on Qwikster. Q: Will Qwikster maintain its diverse library of videos, like the hard-to-find indie films that don't play within my local theater? A: Not according to indieWIRE, which states it's speaking with indie filmmakers the organization is not refreshing their deals. Q: Jeez. Will there be any advantage the Qwikster membership has on the classic-fashioned Netflix DVD membership? A: If you want to buy improving, you'll be able to rent game game titles from Qwikster too. Q: Does it look like Netflix rushed into this decision after dealing with this summer's huge backlash? A: Kind of. Ultimately, the business apparently didn't bother to ascertain if Qwikster was an available Twitter handle. Q: Could it happen to be? A: No, it is going with a guy whose NSFW Twitter feed was marked by an avatar of Elmo smoking some pot. (Since the weekend, he's acquired about 10,000 more Twitter fans together with a far more innocuous profile picture, a coat of arms.) Q: What's been the response for the Qwikster announcement? A: Well, about thirty percent of Netflix clients are seriously considering losing their membership. Netflix stock, which was purchasing and selling underneath $300 a participate This summer time just before the subscription cost hike, had declined close to $156 in the start of now and closed at $128.50 on Wednesday. No less than 26,000 commenters have responded, largely negatively, to Hastings' blog publish. Q: Will there be anyone who thinks this is a great idea? A: Tech author Serta Frommer lists 10 main reasons why he thinks the split is smart. Wired's Eliot Van Buskirk notes the streaming video customers are really just the streaming video rights certification business, which he argues that splitting that taken off the DVD business should give Netflix more settling energy while using art galleries. La Occasions movie author Patrick Goldstein confirms that Digital video disks are dying. And also on Wednesday, Discovery Communications introduced it absolutely was producing cases of Discovery Funnel, TLC and Animal Planet shows on Netflix. So there's one or more content provider who likes the completely new arrangement. You will possibly not be capable of stream a movie like 'Lars as well as the Real Girl,' however, you will have a way to trap really 'Say Yes for the Dress.' And Blockbuster will unveil a completely new streaming service furthermore to its DVD-by-mail monthly monthly subscriptions. Blockbuster now would go to Dish Network, which possesses its own on-demand service and handles content companies, and that means you perform the mathematics. Q: Another options is it necessary for DVD rental costs and streaming movies? 5 Ways Simon Cowell Plans to Crush Idol with The X Factor: Mo' Money, Crazy Nicole

L.A. Reid, Nicole Scherzinger, Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul judging thousands of aspiring singers, some of whom will make your ears bleed? Sounds like American Idol redux. At first glance, there isn't a ton separating Cowell's new music competition show, The X Factor, from its predecessors - until you stack up the details. Then Cowell's master plan for music show domination becomes all too clear. My God, It's huge! And 9 other things we learned at the premiere of The X Factor In advance of Wednesday's premiere (8/7c on Fox), Cowell and the other X Factor judges help explain the five biggest ways in which their show will crush the competition. 5. He'll throw more money at the screen: How best to top his former colleagues at Idol? Take the Michael Bay approach! (And if you haven't heard, Fox has signed on for that, pronouncing The X Factor the biggest show on the planet.) Think va va voom aerial shots, grand entrances for the judges via helicopter and expensive arenas filled with thousands to host the audition rounds. And that's just the audition rounds! "When we started here [in the U.S.], we were only going to go with the network who was going to support it with their wallet," Cowell says. "The No. 1 question we had is: Why is this show different from everything else, and I've always said, 'If you watch it, you'll see the difference.'" Fall TV: Get the lowdown on this season's must-see new shows 4. The judges won't be as nice as the judges on The Voice: The Voice coaches have it so easy, sitting in their big red chairs, pushing a button when they hear something purdy, hand-picking their favorite singers for their teams. Those coaches never have to work with someone they don't like. On The X Factor, however, producers assign each judge one of four groups to mentor - males, females, groups and singers over 30 - and not everyone will be happy with their team. To wit, singers only need three out of four judges to say yes to advance, so chances are all the judges will be working with at least one contestant they originally turned down. And in stark contrast to the latest season of Idol, which featured not one harsh word for the top 13 finalists, Cowell says the auditions are the "nice" rounds. Expect the fangs to come out afterward. 3. They've recruited a real sparring partner for Simon: Simon likes nothing better than a verbal smackdown - unfortunately, watching him take on Randy "for me, for you, it was just aiight" Jackson and Ryan Seacrest has been only a study in Cowell's patience. They're like window dressing compared to X Factor judge L.A. Reid, a record executive who counts Pink and Mariah Carey among his hits. And when Simon and L.A. face off, their disagreements usually add to the conversation about the talent, rather than detract from it. "We have both run record labels and we always wanted the No.1 record. We competed with each other and that's why I wanted him on the show," Cowell says. "I didn't want someone who was going to agree with me. I wanted someone who was competitive and he is the most competitive person." Simon Cowell's X Factor will have drunks in the audience! Plus: Scherzinger changes accents! 2. There will be cry-offs between Nicole and Paula: Here's how new judge Nicole Scherzinger talks about the pains of the job: "It's hard because you really empathize. This isn't just a talent show. These are real people who have families who are struggling and it feels like their whole life is on the line, and you're a part of that. So for me, it's been very emotional. I have to say no to people who are losing their houses and people whose family just passed away the week before and it's been very hard for me." Even Paula, the former teary-eyed cheerleader champion of singing competitions, says she was taken aback about how emotional Nicole got during the audition rounds. "She was way ahead of me, which was amazing," Paula says. "It was like, wow, someone else is a crier." 1. Nicole will also be allowed to out-crazy Paula: Yes, Paula is still kooky and unpredictable - one first-round contestant makes her gag and she leaves the judging table - but Nicole is right on her heels. Simon has already said she spontaneously switches accents, and we're probably going to hear a lot about her having gotten her start by winning a singing competition herself several years ago. Eden's Crush, anyone? But she's a talkative one, and judging by the 90-minute mash-up of Episodes 1 and 2 screened for reporters, producers are going to let her ramble. Here's a sample, the answer to "What makes you a good fit for The X Factor?" "I can only bring my experiences and that's me having been on a show like this 10 years ago and being an artist, and bringing an artist's heart and soul, which we usually wear on our sleeve. I bring that empathy and compassion and understanding. But at the same time, I'm pretty tough. I've worked very hard to get to where I am and I know what it takes. Therefore, when I work with the contestants, I'm going to work to bring out the best in them ..." Will you watch The X Factor? What are you most excited to see?
